Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion is a safe and simple day-surgery procedure. You will need to contact us to arrange an appointment time.

On the day of the procedure you must not eat or drink 6 hours prior coming to Nanyara. You will need to arrange transport home as it is illegal to drive for 24 hours after the anaesthetic. We strongly advise you bring a support person with you.

It is advisable not to bring children although we do have rooms available if this is unavoidable.

What to expect

Firstly, You will be taken through and asked questions regarding your medical history and overall general health. An ultrasound will be performed to determine gestation. We provide information regarding future contraception and information for counselling services you may require after the procedure.

Next, you will be called in by Dr V Chan, who will take you into his consulting room. There he will ask about your medical, obstetrics and gynaecological histories. He will explain the the procedure to you and answer any questions or concerns you may have. A contraceptive can also be prescribed for you at this time. When Dr Chan is fully satisfied that you have a clear understanding of the procedure and you want to proceed with the termination, you will be seen by the Anaesthetist, who will discuss the anaesthetic with you.

The procedure takes approxiamately 6-10 minutes. When the procedure is over you will go to a private recovery room where a nurse will ensure you are recovering as comfortably as possible. Your support person is encouraged to be with you at this time. When you are alert and medically stable, a nurse will talk to you about post-operative care to enable you to best care for yourself while you complete your recovery. You will also be given some written information regarding post-operative care and emergency contact details for Dr Chan.
