Medical Abortion

Medical abortion is a safe way to terminate an early pregnancy using medication instead of surgery.

Like all medications, there are possible side effects to the medicines used in this procedure.

You will need to contact us to arrange an appointment time.

What to expect

Firstly, You will be taken through and asked questions regarding your medical history and overall general health. An ultrasound will be performed to determine gestation. We provide information regarding future contraception and information for counselling services you may require after the procedure.

Next, you will be called in by Dr V Chan, who will take you into his consulting room. There he will ask about your medical, obstetrics and gynaecological histories. He will explain the the procedure to you along with any side-effects you can experience from the medications. Please feel free to ask any questions or raise any concerns you may have. A contraceptive can also be prescribed for you at this time. When Dr Chan is fully satisfied that you have a clear understanding of of the procedure and you want to proceed with the termination, the first tablets will be administered.

The second stage of the procedure requires you to take a second lot of tablets at home, 24-48 hours after your appointment. Usually around 4 hours after taking these tablets you can expect some vaginal bleeding, cramping and you will pass some pregnancy tissue. It is very important you come back to the clinic two weeks after your initial appointment for an assessment and to ensure the abortion is complete.
